Today at around 1:30 PM we started facing a sudden slowdown in website access. We couldn't access our data servers also. Even now we are unable to access our servers properly. All internet traffic is slow at the moment (to US & UK) due to undersea cable cut (cables that carry internet traffic).

Here is an extract from the email we received from our data center:

We are observing failure in the undersea cable system ( FEA) between Alxendria (Egypt) and Palermo (Italy). Cable systems SMW3, SMW 4 towards Atlantic are also out of service from 13.20 hrs IST. Outage is suspected due to cable cuts or shunt faults.

A. Service Affected:
1. IPLC services towards UK/US and its protection on SMW3 or SMW4
2. Internet traffic towards UK/US and customers may be facing full outage or degradation in service performance in terms of latency and packet drops.
3. Internet traffic towards HGK may be facing service degradation
4. International voice traffic ( PPU) towards UK/US.

B. Current Status:
1. RCOM and Globalcom Teams fully mobilized for troubleshooting. All parties engaged and connected.
2. IPLC Traffic on the East Of India (Pacific) side is operational as usual
3. IPLC and Internet Traffic for Middle East is unaffected as Falcon system is up and running

C. Current ETR: To be established.

D. Follow-up:
1. Subsequent progress will be informed at regular intervals.

We will post more information as and when we receive it. Please bear with us until then.

Update about the ongoing under sea cable cut:

FEA Subsea Cable System of Reliance Globalcom has major failure on Segment D on 19 December 08 at about 08:06 GMT.

Based on the multiple COTDR test from Alexandria CLS, the fault appears to be at 44.260km from Repeater 4 (R4) towards Repeater 3 (R3) between Alexandria and Palermo segment. The detailed analysis on COTDR measurements from Palermo is also in progress.
Current status: Cable Ship Teliri has reached Catania Depot as scheduled at 14:00L (GMT+2) on Monday ( 22 Dec 08 ). Cable Ship reports the cable loading is underway now and is expected to be completed by 23:00L tonight. The vessel is now expected to sail at 23:59L on 23 Dec 08. Cable Ship is now estimated to reach the repair ground at 18:00L on Wednesday 24 Dec 08, subject to weather and cable/sea conditions. The repair operation is still estimated to be completed anytime within 27 Dec - 30 Dec.

Further update will be shared on 24th Dec 2008 by 1300GMT.
